Just like the IELTS, the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) is an English language test designed to evaluate the language proficiency of individuals who aim to work or immigrate to Canada. CELPIP is recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for professional registration, permanent residency, and citizenship applications.
There are several distinctive differences between CELPIP and IELTS:
- CELPIP is a purely Canadian test, unlike an international IELTS, so it is available only in Canada;
- While IELTS assesses four language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking), CELPIP focuses more on practical communication skills used in everyday situations;
- Unlike IELTS, which combines computer and paper-based tests, CELPIP exists only in the computer-based format, including the Speaking module, which involves recorded responses;
- CELPIP offers only Canadian context: the test is specifically designed to reflect Canadian accents, vocabulary, and cultural references, with a focus on Canadian English.
For test-takers, CELPIP has its own pros and cons.
Advantages of CELPIP:
- It is easier than IELTS and does not have the academic focus
- In the Writing section, spellcheck is available
Drawbacks of the test:
- Limited availability as compared with IELTS
- Only digital format
- Some questions may be confusing
I recommend that test-takers who have to choose between IELTS and CELPIP familiarize themselves with both tests using the provided online resources, including free practice materials. You can book a CELPIP consultation here
